Llanelli Town proved emphatically on the visit of near-neighbours Ammanford that they were not just a one-man band, as a storming all-round display, particularly from Luke Jones who filled in for the absent Lee Trundle, took the opposition to the cleaners, and could well have added more to the final tally. Jones helped himself to a brace, with the only regret being he did not notch a hat-trick, with other contributions coming from Jordan Follows, Callum Silcox and Chris Thomas.
The visitors, on paper, are a decent side, but they had no answer to the intensity of their opponents who, on this form, are going to be a difficult side to beat. The writing was on the wall as early as the fourth minute following an initial attempt by Silcox which was blocked but rebounded to Jones whose effort suffered a similar fate, before Follows eventually was on hand to beat goalkeeper James Kirkwood from close range.
A flare-up involving players on both sides came after a robust challenge by the visitorsCerith Wiliams on Robert Thomas, and Williams continued to tread a fine line throughout the contest with referee Paul Meredith taking a lenient view regarding some of his tackles. Follows played a delightful pass which was pursued by Kyle Graves, but he was denied by a last ditch interception, and when Silcox set up Jones in the area, he was unable to turn to get away his strike.
On the half hour, the Reds increased the lead when a ball back to Kirkwood led to Jones challenging for possession, and when the keeper attempted his clearance, it rebounded off the striker and into the net. The home goal had barely come under threat, the nearest effort arising from a Ross Jones free kick driven low into the goalmouth which Craig Morris dealt with comfortably.
Robert Thomas brought off a timely tackle to deny Craig Frater when the visitors` striker was homing in on goal, before the hosts struck again in the 39th minute with Kirkwood again being culpable when attempting a clearance, with Ross Jones on this occasion making life difficult for him, and the ball eventually arriving at the feet of Silcox who slotted home.
The Ammanford rearguard was being run ragged, and when a Lee Bevan clearance sent Follows clear, he unselfishly squared a pass to Jones, but his attempt on target was blocked. There were appeals for a penalty by the home side when Jones appeared to be hauled down in the box by Euros Griffiths, but the referee waved them away. In cruise control at the interval, the Reds made a change with Liam Samuel replacing Follows at the start of the second period, but the visitors did prove more of a threat in the second half, without causing too many problems.
Morris was called into a rare piece of action to keep out with an outstretched leg a flick by Jonathan Thomas, while Chris Thomas got In the way of a Frater attempt after a header forward by Williams. Sam Wade, returning to the Reds for a second stint following his move from Goytre United, came on for Silcox, before the lead was extended further in the 63rd minute with Jones displaying good strength to burst through two tackles, finishing with a fierce strike past Kirkwood.
Further chances continued to be created by the home side, with Samuel being put clear by Jordan Davies, who also deserves a mention for another outstanding midfield display, but this time Kirkwood was able to keep out his near post attempt. This was just a respite, as a Richard Lewis corner was headed goalwards by Bevan with Chris Thomas making sure by diverting it beyond the keeper after 70 minutes. Jones could then have added further to his tally, but shot into the side netting when he was paut clear, and fired just wide shortly after when afforded another opportunity. The final whistle must have come as somewhat of a relief to Ammanford who had been comprehensively outplayed, and the result sees the Reds regain top spot in the league table, and can look forward with confidence to the upcoming league and cup fixtures which await them.
